Florent Malouda Biography

Frenchman Malouda was Jose Mourinho's last signing as Chelsea boss and never really got the opportunity to play for the Portugese coach after he quit the club in September 2007.

His first season with the club saw him perform well below the level expected of him after a lengthy chase for his £13.5million signing from Lyon.

A poor summer showing at Euro 2008 seemed to confirm to many that he was short of the class required for a club of the aspirations of Chelsea.

A left-footed attacking midfielder who is both technically gifted and physically strong, the left-winger who can also play in the middle began his career at Châteauroux in 1996 before moving on to Guingamp in 2000.

His performances there earned the big £4.2m move to Lyon three years later where he won four consecutive Ligue 1 titles.

Malouda was a team-mate of Didier Drogba at Guingamp and the pair enjoyed a happy spell together.

The 'old boys reunion' will also feature Michael Essien, as the pair played together at Lyon for two years before the Ghana midfielder moved to the Premier League.

He became one of the highly-rated players in French football, winning his first full international cap on November 17, 2004 against Poland.

The winger was also a member of the French squad at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He was an unused sub in the opening match but then started every match as France lost out on penalties to Italy in the final.

Malouda was named the Player of the Season in Ligue 1 for 2006/07 prior to his move to Chelsea.

Michael Ballack Biography

German skipper Michael Ballack signed for Chelsea on a free transfer after four seasons with German Champions Bayern Munich.

Although he came on a free, there was the small matter of a reported wage of £120,000-a-week.

But Ballack's impact at Chelsea was negligible and his below par performances were said to be one of the reasons the Blues lost their Premier League crown to Manchester United.

He struggled to adapt to the pace of the English game and to sharing a midfield role with Frank Lampard who clearly outshone the Germany international.

Well known for being a versatile and well-conditioned player, as well as one of the best headers of the ball in world football, Ballack made his name as a classic box-to-box midfielder with Bayer Leverkusen.

Ballack arrived as a real world-class player who can play with either foot. These attributes earned him the German player of the year award on three occasions (2002, 2003, 2005).

Beginning his career in 1995, Ballack was given his first professional contract by Chemnitzer FC, thanks to his impressive performances in the role of central midfield.

Dubbed the 'Little Kaiser' in reference to German legend Franz Beckenbauer, his skills were noticed by decorated German coach Otto Rehhagel and he signed for FC Kaiserslautern in the summer of 1997.

Ballack became a regular in the side over the coming years, and he was fully established as a kep component of the side in 1999, where he made his first international appearance for Germany.

Ballack moved to Bayer Leverkusen for ¬4.8 million, at the age of 22, where he would go on to make his name as one of the best players in Germany.

Making his full breakthrough under coaches Christoph Daum and Klaus Toppmöller, Ballack was given licence to roam and pull the strings in the centre of the pitch. Proving a reliable finisher, he scored 27 goals in 3 seasons at the BayArena and netted a further 9 times in Europe.

His development into one of Europe's best midfielders continued as Leverkusen endured a heartbreaking 2001/02 season, coming second in the Bundesliga again and losing in both the UEFA Champions League final and German Cup final.

He also endured the personal agony of losing the World Cup Final in the same year, although his remarkable season- finishing with 17 league goals from midfield, led to him being voted Germany's Footballer of the Year.

Real Madrid approached the midfielder but he chose to stay in Germany, signing instead for German giants Bayern Munich in a ¬12.9 m deal in 2002.

Ballack was deployed more defensively in the Munich side, but still popped up with 10 goals as Bayern stormed the to Bundesliga title. He also scored twice in the 3-1 German Cup final win against Kaiserslautern.

After a difficult second season, Ballack claimed the midfield role for himself in 2004/05 as Bayern completed another double. In four seasons at Bayern, Ballack won three Bundesliga and German Cup doubles and scored 47 goals in 135 matches.

Between 1998 and 2005, Ballack had notched up 61 goals in his domestic league.

However, in 2006, his relationship with Bayern turned sour. Open criticism from general manager Uli Hoeness did not help matters and Ballack made it clear he was looking for a big move when his contract expired in the summer.

During his final few games, he was jeered throughout the stadium, despite his years of service.

Ballack agreed a transfer to big spending Chelsea in summer 2006, on a Bosman free deal. Reportedly the highest paid Premiership player on £120,000 a week, Ballack iterated his desire to stamp his authority on the English game.

So far, however, he has only managed to stamp on Momo Sissoko and get himself sent off in the Community Shield match against Liverpool.

Despite his settling in period, manager Jose Mourinho is a great admirer of the player, saying: 'For me he's one of the best players in the world. He's very intelligent, tactically very strong and he scores a lot of goals. For me in Europe there's only [England and Chelsea's] Frank Lampard who plays at that level. The two would form a dream pair.'

Scoring his first goal for the club in September 2006, a penalty, Ballack then struggled with a hip injury, limiting his first team chances at the start of the season.

On his return to fitness he still looked a shadow of the player who had carved out a reputation as one of the best midfielders in Europe.

And his first season in England ended in mid-April due to an ankle injury. His only trophy was the League Cup.

Throughout the campaign Ballack was linked with a move away due to his inability to settle, but Mourinho was determined to make it work.

Nani Biography

In signing a young Portugese winger, Sir Alex Ferguson was obviously hoping that lightning would strike twice.

Comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo will perhaps always follow the young man from the Cape Verde Islands, especially as Ronaldo preceded him at Sporting Lisbon.

He made his debut in the 2005/6 season, making 32 appearances and grabbing five goals. His second season was similarly successful, again scoring five, and making 29 appearances. Season 2006/7 also saw him make his Champions League bow.

His form for his club, and his country, for whom he made his debut in September 2006, saw him attract the attention of clubs across Europe before United stole a march on Spurs, widely believed to be his final destination, to sign him on a trip to Portugal in May 2007 that also saw chief exec David Gill sign Brazilian star Anderson.

Nani is believed to have cost £14m and celebrated his move by playing for his country's Under-21 team at the European championships.

Nani soon lit up the Premier League with some fine displays, even if he had to be content with a place on the bench most of the time. United fans will particularly remember his juggling antics in the FA Cup which frustrated a thumped Arsenal so much. They felt it was disrespectful.

With a Premier League title and a Champions League medal in his pocket after a debut season of 41 appearances and four goals.

He was part of the Portugal squad at Euro 2008, appearing three times as the nation went out in the quarter-finals.

With rumours about Cristiano Ronaldo's future in the summer of 2008 many United fans felt Nani was good enough to make the step up without the need to sign a replacement.

Ryan Giggs Biography

The Welsh Wizard looks likely to see out his career at United, having made his debut as a 17-year-old for the club against Everton in March 1991.

And an outstanding Old Trafford career hit new heights at the end of the 2007/08 season as he surpassed Bobby Charlton's all-time appearance record as he played his 759th first-team game for United in the Champions League final against Chelsea.

He was actually christened Ryan Wilson before taking on his mother's maiden name.

Having been snatched from under the eyes of Manchester City, Giggs made his first league start in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford in 1990/01 and scored the only goal of the match.

In 1991/92 he became first-choice left-winger at Old Trafford, winning every domestic trophy as the club swept all before during the 1990s.

One of the most talented players in world football, his main asset is his ability to use his skills at a top speed quicker than just about any defender in the game. He has also weighed in his fair share of important goals for Manchester United, including a wonder solo strike in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

The 1999/2000 season was probably his best in a glittering career and was rewarded with a new terrace anthem, "Giggs will tear you apart", sang to the tune of Joy Division's "Love will tear you apart". He followed that success in the following season.

Though 2001/02 was a curate's egg for Giggs, with the same old hamstring injury hampering him, he gave some match-winning performances, especially as an auxiliary forward supporting Ruud van Nistelrooy. He was rewarded by being in the PFA Team of the Season for the umpteenth time.

But the 2002/03 season saw Giggs suffer a loss of form and endure barracking from the United fans. Talk of a move to Inter Milan, who tracked him for some time, continued throughout the campaign.

His biggest error came in the FA Cup against Arsenal when the ball broke to him just outside the box. He shimmied round the goalkeeper and, with the goal at his mercy, somehow managed to fire over the bar with his right boot.

But his performances improved as United won the title.

The winger enjoyed a good season in 2003/04, although he suffered heartbreak with Wales who came so close to making it into the finals of Euro 2004, losing to Russia in the play-offs.

He picked up yet another FA Cup winners' medal that season, and weighed in with 8 goals.

After sorting out contract troubles he will now look to see out his playing days with United.

The pace may be waning but his skills remain.

Giggs started the 2006/7 season like a train and continued to be consistent throughout, though perhaps a little on the wane as the season drew to an end.

He gave up international football for Wales in June 2007, citing the fact that he wanted to continue at the top for his club as long as possible.

Another Premier League-Champions League double in 2007/08, coupled with his new appearance record, was a further triumph.

Whatever happens; Giggs will retire a United legend.

Raul Gonzalez Biography

Raúl was born in the Madrid suburb of Marconi de San Cristóbal de los Ángeles. After winning his spurs as a member of provincial amateur team San Cristóbal de los Ángeles, his father signed him up for Atlético Madrid at the age of 13. Raúl rose through the ranks, winning the national title with the Under-15 youth team (cadete), and seemed destined to join the professional side when Atlético president Jesús Gil dissolved the club's entire youth scheme in an effort to save money. Real Madrid scouts quickly signed Raúl and he started the 1992-93 season with the Cadete A. Raúl again won another Cadete title. In 1993-94, he began the season with the Juvenil B team, moved on to Juvenil A, and was promoted to the Under-19 División de Honor team. He began the 1994-95 season in Madrid's "C" team, and scored 13 goals in the seven games. In October 1994, head coach Jorge Valdano picked the gifted teenager in his first team. At just 17 years and four months, Raúl became the youngest player ever to wear a Real Madrid shirt. In doing so, he nudged aside 1991 Pichichi Trophy winner Emilio Butragueño, and was soon well on the way to becoming Spain's new sensation. He scored nine times in his first season from 28 appearances, including one in his second game against Atlético, and won the Spanish La Liga championship. Raúl made his national team debut against the Czech Republic in October 1996. Raúl's performances for Spain have since mirrored the nation's fortunes, Spain being dubbed the "greatest underachievers" in international football.

Raúl was a key player in Real Madrid's six big titles from 1998 to 2003. With Real, he won three European UEFA Champions League trophies in 1998, 2000 and 2002, scoring the clinching goal in the 2000 Champions League final. On the domestic scene, he won five Spanish La Liga championships in 1995, 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2007. After Fernando Hierro retired from the Spanish national team in 2002, Raúl became the captain for Real Madrid and Spain.

Ever since 2003, he has been under heavy criticism by the media and part of the supporters because of his poor performances in the last four years, in which Real Madrid struggled to win a European competition, with no success in either of them. These struggles have seen Raúl relegated at times to the substitutes bench by both club and country, leaving questions as to how much he might have in the tank. It is widely rumoured that the primary reason why Raúl starts in the Real Madrid line-up is because he has tremendous influence in Madrid. During the 2006/7 season, Raul has managed to regain some of the former displays of the past, and has created an impressive partnership with Dutch striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Because of his effort and passion for Real Madrid, he has shown his ability to play in a number of different positions including left/right winger. Raúl's hard work has paid off as Real Madrid have won La Liga 2006/2007.

On 28 September 2005 against Greek power Olympiakos, his 97th UEFA Champions League match, he became the first player to score 50 goals in the history of the tournament, passing Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stéfano. He is currently the top goal scorer of the competition, with 56 goals, scoring the last two in the 1st leg of their knockout stage match-up against Bayern Munich. When he led out the Spanish team against San Marino in a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifier on 12 October 2005, he surpassed his predecessor as Spain captain, Fernando Hierro, as the most-capped outfield player (i.e., not a goalkeeper) in Spanish history.

On June 19, with a goal against Tunisia, Raúl became the 18th player to score in 3 different editions of the FIFA World Cup. He has scored in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Xabi Alonso Biography

Alonso was one of the first players manager Rafael Benitez brought to Liverpool, paying Real Sociedad £10.5million to secure his signature in August 2004.

The Spanish international quickly proved himself to be one of the clubs most impressive signings with performances of great vision and passing ability.

Given the size of the price tag he had to produce and, unlike fellow Spaniard Luis Garcia, he won over the Anfield supporters with a series of superb displays.

However, the gifted playmaker endured a tough 2007/08 season at Anfield as he slipped down the pecking order, sparking speculation that he would be sold, but managed to force his way back into manager Rafael Benitez's side in the final stages of the campaign.

That was enough to secure his place in the Spanish squad for Euro 2008 and Alonso made four appearances as Spain won the competition to become European Champions.

He returned to Liverpool and despite being linked with a transfer to Juventus claimed he was happy to remain at Anfield.

The son of former Sociedad boss Periko Alonso, a midfield warrior for Sociedad, Barcelona and Spain, Xabi was one of the most important players in a Sociedad side which finished as runners-up to Real Madrid in the 2002/03 season - missing out on the final day.

But the 2003/04 was a disappointment for Sociedad. In a fall from grace reminiscent of Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers in the 1990s, they went from championship challengers to relegation fodder in a matter of months. After a decent start they slid down the table, recovering to finish five points above Real Valladolid in the final relegation place.

After switching to Liverpool after international duty with Spain at Euro 2004, he made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers and soon became a vital player for the Anfield club.

It was a huge blow when, following a tackle by Chelsea's Frank Lampard, he was ruled out for three-and-a-half months just after the turn of the year.

He returned to help Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005, scoring the goal which completed the comeback from three goals down against AC Milan before victory was secured on penalties.

Alonso's quality performances continued through 2005/06 and in January 2006 he scored from his won half against Luton Town in the FA Cup 3rd round and improved on that strike with another goal from inside his own half against Newcastle in September of the same year.

In June 2007 Alonso signed an improved 5-year contract, which will last until 2012.

In England he lives next door to Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta, who he grew up with on the same street in San Sebastián, Spain.

John Terry Biography

John George Terry (born 7 December 1980) is an English professional football player. Terry is a strong, hard-tackling centre back, who is currently captain of Chelsea F.C. in the English Premier League, and a regular member of the England national team.

Terry was born in Barking, East London and attended Eastbury Comprehensive School. Before being spotted by Chelsea, he played for Sunday League Team Senrab FC. This team featured many future stars including Terry himself, Bobby Zamora, Paul Konchesky, Ledley King and J Lloyd Samuel. He rose through the Chelsea youth system, playing for the club's Youth and Reserve teams before making his Chelsea debut in October 1998. He spent three months with West London rivials West Ham United F.C. before in March 2000 he joined Nottingham Forest F.C. on loan for two months. He wears the number 26 shirt at Chelsea.

In season 2003/04, his strong, committed and inspiring displays led to him being handed the captain's armband by manager Claudio Ranieri when Marcel Desailly was out of the side. He played very well in the absence of the French legend, establishing himself as a genuine contender for a first team slot. Following Desailly's retirement, new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wanted Terry as his club captain - a choice which was justified throughout the 2004/5 season. Terry scored eight goals and was voted Player of the Year by his fellow professionals in England. In September 2005 he was selected as a member of the World XI at the FIFPro awards. The team was chosen by a vote of professional footballers in 40 countries.

Terry is a regular in the England national team, having earned 21 caps as of 14 November 2005. He made his debut in June 2003 against Serbia and Montenegro. He played for his country at Euro 2004, and England Manager Sven Goran Eriksson said recently he believed Terry to be his first-choice centre back, ahead of the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell. In a game against Poland, he had the honour of wearing England's captain armband, replacing Michael Owen as captain after the latter was taken off. He was the heart of the Chelsea defense that was the most well-marshalled in Football league history in the 2004/5 season, conceding only 15 League goals. In 2005 Terry was voted best defender of the UEFA Champions League tournament, after not only defending and organising his team superbly but scoring four goals in the tournament including the winning goal against Barcelona in the second round.

Early in his career, Terry was involved in an unsavoury incident in a West London nightclub with fellow players Jody Morris and Des Byrne. He was charged with assault and affray but later cleared. During the affair, he received a temporary ban from the national side, which cost him a place in England's 2002 World Cup squad. However, he is now praised as a model professional. Along with Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele and Petr Cech, Terry is regarded as a part of the "spine" of the Chelsea team. Being a Londoner who came through the club's youth system, he is especially popular with Chelsea fans. Widely regarded as the best header of the ball in the world, Terry offers an almost unmarkable threat at set-pieces as he has an uncanny ability to time and place his runs with the fall of the ball. His headers against Arsenal and Charlton in the Premier League provided examples of his excellent heading ability.

Terry currently lives in Surrey with his fiancee, Toni Poole of 7 years. They are expecting twins in June. His older brother Paul is also a professional footballer, but plays at a much lower level, currently for Yeovil Town F.C.

Andriy Shevchenko Biography

Heralded as the final piece in the jigsaw for Chelsea, Shevchenko has proved to be more of a missing link than a superstar talisman. Two seasons of poor form saw him labelled as perhaps the biggest multi-million flop in Premier League history.

Chelsea ended a three-year pursuit of one of the world's greatest players when signing Andriy Shevchenko prior to the start of the 2006 World Cup.

But it is arguable that Chelsea got their man too late in his career - he looked laboured in the Premier League as he struggled to adapt to the pace of the game after so long in Serie A.

Added to that, there was much speculation that he was Roman Abramovich's signing and not really wanted by Jose Mourinho. What is certain that were was little harmony for Sheva at Stamford Bridge.

The Ukraine international, who had been friends with Chelsea owner Abramovich for many years, moved to Chelsea for a fee of £30million from AC Milan.

All looked well for Sheva when he scored on his debut in a 2-1 Community Sheild defeat to Liverpool, a trademark finish from a one-on-one.

And he then bagged his first Premier League goal in his second appearance as the Blues lost 2-1 at Middlesbrough.

But the goals - and the performances - then dried up for the Ukrainian striker.

Shevchenko made his name with Dynamo Kiev, forming a deadly partnership with Sergiy Rebrov both at domestic and international level.

His strike partnership with Rebrov remarkably fired Kiev into the semi-finals of the Champions League in 1998/99 and at the end of the campaign Sheva was sold to AC Milan for a fee of £18million.

Shevchenko, born in Dvirkivshchyna, Kiev, built up a reputation as possibly the most feared hitman in Europe.

In his time in Milan he helped the Italian giants to the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup, as well as Champions League success in 2003. It was Shevchenko who slotted home the winning spot-kick in the shoot-out against Juventus at Old Trafford.

His performances both domestically and in the Champions League led to the striker being voted as European Footballer of the Year in 2004. He was voted into the top ten of the European award in five of his six seasons at the San Siro.

After his penalty heroics in the 2003 Champions League final, Shevchenko found himself the villain of the piece against Liverpool in 2005.

With Milan threatened with relegation to Serie B as part of the match-fixing scandal at the end of the 2005/06 season, Shevchenko decided it was the perfect opportunity to move to England and finally join Chelsea.

Although there were many raised eyebrows when Chelsea spent £30million on a player aged 29, there could be no mistaking the quality of the striker.

Milan have repeatedly spoken of their desire to take Sheva back to the San Siro. And his future surely seems to lie away from the Bridge if he is to prosper again.

Ronaldo Biography

A brilliant and fluid forward, Ronaldo became one of international soccer's great stars of the 1990s and Brazil's biggest soccer hero since Pele. At age 17 he was a member of Brazil's 1994 World Cup-winning squad, though he did not play. The same year he joined the Dutch professional team PSV Eindhoven. His professional contract was purchased by Barcelona in 1996; the next year he moved again to Italy's F.C. Internazionale Milano, remaining until 2002 when he transferred to Real Madrid. He was named FIFA's World Footballer of the Year in 1996 and 1997, becoming both the youngest player to win the award and the only player to win the award in consecutive years. He also starred in the 1998 World Cup, scoring four goals in leading Brazil to the Cup finals, but he was criticized for their 3-0 loss to France in the championship game. Slowed by injuries in the 21st century, Ronaldo nonetheless made a triumphant return by leading Brazil to the World Cup championship in 2002. He won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer (with eight goals) and scored both goals in Brazil's 2-0 final game win over Germany. Despite accusations that he had become overweight and less than energetic, Ronaldo scored three goals in the 2006 World Cup, giving him a total of 15 in World Cup play -- a new record. He transferred from Real Madrid to A.C. Milan in January of 2007; he was injured in early 2008 and his contract was not renewed later that year.

Ronaldo wears jersey number 9. He should not be confused with Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese soccer star. It's a Brazilian soccer tradition for stars to be known by their first name alone... Ronaldo was named for Dr. Ronaldo Valente, who attended his birth... Ronaldo's 1994 World Cup jersey read "Ronaldinho" to distinguish him from an older teammate with the same name; by the 2002 World Cup he had become the undisputed Ronaldo and was joined by a younger teammate who was called, in turn, Ronaldinho... World Cup 2006 was won by Italy; Brazil crashed out in the quarterfinals... Ronaldo became engaged to model Daniella Cicarelli in July of 2004, but they later broke off the engagement. Ronaldo previously was married to Brazilian soccer player Milene Domingues from 1999-2003, with whom he has a son, Ronald (b. 2000).

Deco Biography

Chelsea signed the Portugal midfielder after a Euro 2008 showing which rolled back the years to his Porto pomp. For £8m the Blues finally signed a player they had long coveted.

At his best, this little midfield magician has the ability to tear teams apart with his fine passing ability.

Yet there had been great concern surrounding the form and fitness of Deco in Portugal ahead of Euro 2008 as he has endured something of a disrupted season at Barcelona. Until that troubled last season, he spent a successful time in Catalunya, adding to his 2004 Champions League success with Porto with two Liga titles and another Champions League win in 2006.

At Barca he may have had to play second fiddle to the creative talents of stars like Ronaldinho, Messi and Eto'o yet still was hugely effective until that fall out with Frank Rijkaard during 2007/8 which made his exit all but definite.

Few were surprised to see him link up with former Portugal boss Scolari at Chelsea and he was the Brazilian's first signing as Blues boss.

Deco is a naturalised Portugese who moved to his adopted country after failing to make the grade at Corinthians in his hometown of Sao Paulo. The same happened at Lisbon giants Benfica, who loaned him to FC Alverca and Salgueiros before catching the eye of FC Porto, where he came under the influence of Jose Mourinho.

At Porto, Deco won three league titles, three domestic cups, the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League the year after. He was sold to Barcelona after that final victory in Gelsenkirchen in which he scored the second of Porto's three goals in their rout of AS Monaco. He had been expected to join the newly arrived Mourinho at Chelsea but chose the Nou Camp instead.

Having never played for Brazil, he was qualified by his six-year Portugese residency to become a Portugese citizen. There was plenty of opposition to his selection for Portugal, but such is the quality he has displayed since his international debut in 2003 that all such debates have long since subsided.

He went some way to ending that talk in his very first game, scoring against Brazil of all teams. Deco was a star at Euro 2004, World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008. He has been a true craque for his adopted country.

Adriano Biography

The experts consider him the best player raised in Brazil in the last decade, that is since the appeareance of Ronaldo. His body is chiseled in the long hours spent in a Milan gymnasium, and his boots (size 43) fire thunderous shots from all angles towards the same target. He is a superb ball-holder, shows a surprising agility for his size, and frustrates defenders with his gravity-defying jumps which unmistakeably last a bit longer than expected. That's Adriano – the hottest goods coming from Brazil since Ronaldo!

The Brazilians used to treat the Sudamericano as a second rate competition for a long time, but the largest country of the Green Continent celebrated its seventh South American Championship in style. Perhaps because Argentina were the beaten rivals, perhaps to imitate the euphoria that had accompanied the European Championship.

This year's Sudamericano, held three instead of two years after the previous one, profiled the biggest American soccer star of the younger generation – Adriano Leite Ribeiro, arguably the player that best combines physical strength, speed, ball skils and shooting. The top player and top scorer of the tournament with seven goals in six appearances, Adriano has probably earned a place in the Brazilian starting line-up alongside Ronaldo. This could mean that Brazil will only need one decent passer of the ball in two years time in Germany, because the new "atomic" tandem is poised to crush all defences.

In Peru, Adriano gave a foretaste of what was to follow with a hat trick against Costa Rica, and signed off with his seventh goal in time added on in the final against Argentina. After saving his team from defeat in the last breath of the game, he went on to score from the spot to give Brazil the trophy in the shootout.

After his feats at the Sudamericano, Adriano won a nickname of "the Tank" from the local press, whereas the more imaginative writers compared him with his namesake, Roman emperor Hadrian (Adriano in Spanish), relishing the discovery that the aniversary of his death on July 10th of the year 138 AD fell on the eve of the beginning of this year's tournament in Peru.

Adriano comes from the huts of Vila Humeilde, in Rio de Janeiro's favelas.
"Football is my life, it has always been. But my parents didn't want me to play football. I had to go to school, to study, but in fact I studied so very little." Except for the subject called soccer, in extracurricular activities.

He started his footballing "studies" on the Leblon beach, on which Flamengo practices twice a week, and which used to be frequented by Zico on the lookout for talent. Adriano lifted the 1999 U-17 World Cup in New Zealand, and a year later he made Flamengo's first team under coach Paulo Cesar Carpegiani. On his debut he scored in a resounding 5-2 win over Sao Paulo at their Morumbi Stadium. He held on to his first team spot under Carlinhos and Zagalo, and in the Brazilian U-21 team he was crowned South American champion at the 2000 final tournament in Ecuador.

Such was the progress of this corpulent young man that the national team coach Emerson Leao gave him his first full cap against Colombia in November, but he was again demoted to the youth team for the 2001 U-20 World Cup in Argentina. Now playing above his rank, he finished the tournament as the second-best scorer with six goals behind Javier Saviola, even though Brazil went down to Ghana in the quarterfinals.

Cuper played it safe
That particular showing earned him a 20 million euro worth transfer to Inter.
"I would like to be to Inter what my idol Zico was for Udinese," he said. Next day he starred at the Trofeo Bernabeu in Madrid against hosts Real. In about five minutes he nearly scored with a magnificent header, had a few momentous runs through Real's defence, caused skipper Fernando Hierro to earn himself a red card and then scored with a tremendous shot from the free kick.

Everybody, the fans, press and Ronaldo – then still at Inter – were thrilled, but the coach Hector Cuper was reserved.
"He is not yet a phenomenon, although he could be. I hope he proves useful to us in the future."

As always, Cuper played safe and gave the 19-year old just eight brief appearances in Serie A, before the club sent him on loan to then Roberto Mancini's Fiorentina. In the following six months Adriano proved his worth, netting six times for the "Viola", but his prowess was largely overshadowed by Fiorentina's financial disaster which landed the squad in the fourth division.

Still oblivious to Adriano's charm, Inter's supremo Massimo Moratti forwarded him to Parma and, worse still, sold the cheese-makers a half of the Brazilian's contract for 12,5 million euros. In Parma Adriano shone, scoring 15 goals in Serie A and five in the UEFA Cup. Now confident he would finally get a real chance at Inter, he was bitterly disappointed last summer upon learning he would have to stay in the provinces for further "hardening".

Inter likes it expensive
Inter's supporters were incensed to hear Adriano claim he would not automatically reject a possible approach from AC Milan, while the press wrote that "to lose Adriano would be equivalent to going down to Serie B." It took Inter's dismal run and the long-overdue dismissal of Hector Cuper to mobilise Inter's bosses to bring the Carioca back, only to find that his price had gone up to a total of 58 million euros, which meant that the Milan giants had to pay 29 million euros for the other half of the player's contract, 16,5 million more than they had received from Parma a year and a half before.

Finally, on January 21st Adriano signed a contract tying him to Inter until 2008. He was welcomed as a saviour midway through a season threatening to leave Inter without international football next season, but the new duties did not slow him down. With nine goals in just 13 starts he eclipsed Christian Vieri and Alvaro Recoba, pounding the way to fourth place and a Champions League qualifying round spot. The arrival of his old boss from Fiorentina, Roberto Mancini, was another bit of good news for the Brazilian, since the new coach promised he would not choose between Adriano and Vieri, but would instead build the team around these two formidable goal-poachers.

Thierry Henry Biography

Thierry Daniel Henry (born August 17, 1977 in Les Ulis, France) is a French football player. He currently plays as a striker for the French national football team, and for English club Arsenal, where he is the club's all time leading goalscorer in both league matches and all competitions. Henry is considered one of the most dynamic attacking players in the game today. Although he plays as a striker, his versatility at all aspects of the game makes him more influential than many traditional strikers, and he often drops deep to receive the ball from midfield. Combining speed, vision and creativity, he creates nearly as many goals as he scores. Amongst other things, Henry is well known for his blistering pace and lethal finishing which has put him at the helm of the Premiership top scorers list in recent seasons. Henry trained at the French Football Federation's academy at Clairefontaine and played at a youth level for CO Les Ulis (1983-1989), US Palaiseau (1989-1990), Viry-Chtillon (1990-1992) and FC Versailles (1992-1993). He started his professional career
at AS Monaco, given his do but by then Monaco manager Arsene Wenger at the age of 17. At Monaco, Wenger put Henry on the wing as a temporary measure because the line was already led by Brazilian striker Sonny Anderson. The Frenchman made his international debut in October 1997 against South Africa. He played in Les Bleus' 1998 World Cup success, and was joint-top scorer for France with three goals; he also was part of the Euro 2000 winning squad, scoring a further three goals. He was also leading goalscorer and named player of the tournament as France hosted and won the 2003 Confederations Cup. Having impressed in the 1998 World Cup, Henry left Monaco and moved to Italian club Juventus in January 1999 for a14 million. There, he was made to play on the wing, and in an unfamiliar position was unable to cope with Italian defensive discipline, scoring just three goals while starting only 12 games for the Bianconeri. Unsettled in Italy, he transferred from Juventus in August 1999 to Arsenal for a10.5 million, reuniting with his former mentor, Wenger. At Arsenal, Wenger converted Henry into a striker, where he has flourished ever since. In the seven seasons he has been at Arsenal, Henry has been the club's top goalscorer for every single one. He was made Arsenal captain in the summer of 2005, succeeding the recently departed Patrick Vieira. Regarded by many as the best striker in Arsenal's history, on October 18, 2005 Henry became the club's top goalscorer of all time; two goals against Sparta Prague meant he broke Ian Wright's record of 185 first-class goals. On February 1, 2006, he scored a goal against West Ham, bringing his league goal tally up to 151 and thus breaking Cliff Bastin's Arsenal league goals record. He also contributes a large number of assists - most notably 20 in the 2002/3 season - an all-time Premiership record. Henry has received many plaudits and awards. He was runner-up for the 2003 and 2004 FIFA World Player of the Year award while helping Arsenal to an unbeaten record (26 wins, 12 draws) in the Premiership. He has also won both the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year and the PFA Players' Player of the Year twice. In 2004/5, despite Arsenal being the runners-up in the Premiership, Henry emerged with the European Golden Boot - the award for the top goalscorer in Europe - for the second consecutive year (albeit sharing with Villarreal's Diego Forlan in 2005). Henry has appeared in television advertisements for Nike, Pro Evolution Soccer, and Renault (once with his English model girlfriend Nicole Merry, whom he married in July 2003) and will soon front adverts for Pepsi. On May 27, 2005, Henry celebrated the birth of his first child, Tea Henry. Henry and his family live in Hampstead, north London. In January 2006, the Spanish media reported that Henry would sign for FC Barcelona at the start of the 2006-07 season. However, Henry has repeatedly stated his desire to stay with Arsenal, although as of January 31, 2005 he has not signed the new contract Arsenal are offering.
